Norby’s Steaks & Seafood

The Best Steaks & Seafood in Central Florida

BY MARIALICE QUINN

Friends gathering for steaks on the grill, an evening of camaraderie, good food, good drinks and pleasant conversation: That’s the atmosphere of Norby’s Steak & Seafood. Maybe Norby’s isn’t next door, but it’s well worth the drive – a drive some people make from as far as Jacksonville.

Meandering through the dining rooms chatting with old friends and making new ones, owner Wayne Finger, the man at the grill, makes sure his guests enjoy their night out – from the tasty and unusual appetizers to the hand-cut steaks, Black Grouper and mouth-watering Chocolate Surprise.

Finger purchased Norby’s in 1993 when it was just a small sports bar. On occasion, Wayne grilled steaks for a group of friends. Then the friends invited more friends, who invited their friends and some friends of friends and soon Norby’s became known for the best steaks in central Florida.

Norby’s now offers diners a full menu – full of great steaks to be certain, but also tasty, unusual appetizers and seafood as fresh as you’ll find anywhere. Maine lobster tail split, brushed in butter and grilled over an open fire. Black Grouper – an extra lean white fillet, firm and moist, with a mild sweet flavor and great right off the grill. “If we can’t get Black Grouper,” said Wayne, “then we simply don’t serve grouper until we can. Nothing matches up to the quality of Black Grouper.”

Top quality steaks are cut fresh off the slab by Wayne before he lays them carefully over the flaming grill. “We don’t do any deep frying here,” said Wayne. “Why would you? A perfectly grilled steak or piece of seafood is a glorious thing.”

One of the best ways to dine at Norby’s is by the daily special. Regular menu specials let you combine the best of both worlds – Ribeye and Shrimp, Filet Mignon and Maine Lobster Tail or Crab Legs are just a few of your combination choices. All dinners include a baked potato, vegetables, dinner salad and garlic bread.

“We have some great, unusual appetizers that people drive a long distance for,” said Wayne. Boogie Bob Horsey Bites, a platter of garlic toast rounds topped with tender nuggets of steak and a mild horseradish or sautéed, fresh garlic, can be a meal in itself.

Other appetizers include steamed mussels, oysters on the half shell, baked brie with raspberry puree, langostino, escargot, sausage cheese bread and a smoked fish dip.

Desserts may not always be the same but they are always delicious: Key Lime Pie, Raspberry Lemon Drop, New York Cheesecake, Chocolate Surprise. You’ll want to order several and share.

Norby’s has a special menu just for the kids.
