Fortis Institute in Mulberry

Offers Post-Secondary Technical Career Education

BY LAVERNE STEVENS

We are fortunate to have a local source of Technical Career Education and opportunities for Continuing Education Classes right here in Polk County. Fortis has been in existence for over twenty-eight years preparing the traditional and non-traditional adult student for careers necessary for a growing community. Classes are small in size to offer one-on-one or small group attention in this learning environment. Focus is on the educational needs for the intended career so a student can accomplish these courses without taking a lot of classes in nonrelated subjects to reach completion.

The facility at Fortis in Mulberry is structured with large classrooms containing technical equipment necessary for jobs in the medical field or the heating and cooling industry. Impressive visuals on the walls in the medical classrooms help students learn basic needs for this area of career. X-Ray set up like one would see in a clinic or hospital is right in the classroom for hands-on use. An adult size skeleton is standing in the corner of the room. Also, there are life-size mannequins to provide the hands-on feel of working with someone in distress. The heating and cooling instruction area has actual air-conditioning and heating units in the classroom for hands-on learning, along with the traditional text book instruction.

Courses offered in the medical field include career opportunities for hospitals, physicians’ offices, inpatient and outpatient clinics, long-term care facilities, or corporate offices. The heating and cooling classes prepare students for entry level opportunities in this very necessary job classification in our sweltering Florida climate. And, yes, we do have some pretty cold January and February months here in Florida.

Fortis attracts qualified instructors to bring their skills into the classroom from the medical and technical industries. They have a partnership with community businesses, government agencies, and local employees. The EMT Training Emergency Services Program offers Advanced Life Support level of competence for beginning a career as a “first responder.”

Executive Director Stephanie Seacat stresses that life is powered by learning. “We educate our students to help meet the economic needs of the community in entry level positions,” said Seacat. The goals of Fortis are to develop individual and professional attitudes and an awareness of contemporary career opportunities. Fortis also assists the graduate in finding positions for which they are trained. Help with resume building is given to the student and instruction is given on how to prepare for seeking job applications.

Courses include: EMT Training Emergency Medical Services; Medical Office Basic X-Ray Technician; Medical Insurance Coding Specialist; Medical Assistant; Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration.

Continuing Education is offered at Fortis to re-enforce and update people currently working in the medical field. Courses include: American Heart Association Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support; American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers; and American Heart Association Pediatric Advanced Life Support.
