And Here Comes the Pitch …

FLYING TIGERS

BY MARIA IANNUCCI

It’s definitely Spring. It’s warming up and the cool nights are beginning to become a thing of the past. It’s time for a hot dog smothered in ketchup, mustard and relish, an icy drink in a souvenir cup, and a bag of peanuts. It’s March — when we head to the ballpark, settle into our favorite seats, and sunglasses stay balanced on noses as our collective gaze settles on the pitcher’s mound for that very first…strike.

The 2012 Florida State League Champions, the Lakeland Flying Tigers, are gearing up for another glorious season. The season gets underway on April 4 and is scheduled to run through September 1. Lakeland plays in the Florida State League and has been the Class A Advanced affiliate of the Tigers since 1967, one of the longest unbroken affiliate relationships currently existing. The team was known as the Lakeland Tigers from 1963-1964 and 1967-2006. The Lakeland franchise changed its name to the Flying Tigers to honor the rich military and aviation history of Tiger Town. The Lakeland Flying Tigers are based in Lakeland, Florida and play at Joker Marchant Stadium, which opened in 1966 and was renovated in 2003.
